Young People turn their hand to farming!

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, a group of our young people from the Yorkshire Coast region visited Stepney Hill Farm in Scarborough to get outside and up close with nature.

The group spent a morning at the farm to learn new skills and experience new opportunities within farming and all that comes with running a working farm and hospitality business.

All of the young people who took part pushed themselves to try new things like – tagging the lambs and herding sheep through two large fields. Owner, Ash Tyson taught the group about the history of the land and how Ash is the third generation of famers.

SASH Young Person Coordinator, Tiffany Wilkey said: “Ash and everyone at Stepney Hill Farm were so welcoming and accommodating.  Our young people were given the opportunity to ask questions, learn news skills and were very respectful to Ash, the animals and the land.  We enjoyed a lovely and the most delicious warm homemade scones”.

She added: “Everyone that took part said they were so glad they did as they felt happy.  One young person returned back to placement ‘bouncing’ apparently she had the best time and wants to volunteer for the farm and hopefully progress into learning more about animals and farming life”.
